Discharge and separation from the military are two different things. You can be separated administratively or medically (prior to retirement). However the nature of your discharge (honorable, other than honorable/general, dishonorable) can differ. So, for example, someone can be administratively separated and still receive an honorable discharge depending on their command's prerogative. I imagine for Hunter Biden, he received an ADSEP (admin separation) with an other than honorable discharge. Command likely did not want to deal with any PR blowback pursuing a dishonorable discharge haha

Dishonorable extends to civilian life, and is basically the same as being a convicted felon. Can't buy a gun, can't vote, can never enter a military base. I think you also might not be able to travel internationally. I don't think anyone can reverse it either.
