What in the world are you talking about?
The Big 8 champion (Colorado) was contractually obligated to go to the Orange Bowl and the ACC champ (Georgia Tech) was contractually obligated to go to the Citrus Bowl.

The real problem is the West Coast. Sure, they complain in Texas and the Midwest, but they still love CFB. It's central to their cultural identities, in fact. Not so on the West Coast.
