It's always great to be a Longhorn, and we'll give you a good game in September, although I reserve the right to change that to "good" or "competitive" or "good old college try" depending on how things go for us on Tuesday, and how things go for you on Saturday.

On the one hand, I'm of course disappointed with Texas (the flagship) football. On the other hand, I'm fine with Texas (the state) producing a good number of great players. If either school does hit the right mix in coaching, that's going to to work out well for them, and they'll keep more of those players. I'd feel a lot worse if Texas had gone full bore on soccer or lacrosse and wasn't producing any talent.

Examining the last 10 recruiting classes, the quality of player coming out of the State of Texas has looked like this:

2011 Top 100

4 - 5 star
42 - 4 star

2012 Top 100

5 - 5 star (+1)
53 - 4 star (+11)

2013 Top 100

5 - 5 star
41 - 4 star (-12)

2014 Top 100

5 - 5 star
33 - 4 star (-8)

2015 Top 100

6 - 5 star (+1)
42 - 4 star (+9)

2016 Top 100

2 - 5 star (-4)
53 - 4 star (+11)

2017 Top 100

4 - 5 star (+2)
45 - 4 star (-8)

2018 Top 100

2 - 5 star (-2)
48 - 4 star (+3)

2019 Top 100

6 - 5 star (+4)
41 - 4 star (-7)

2020 Top 100

3 - 5 star (-3)
50 - 4 star (+9)

If you score it like a turnover margin, from 2011 - 2020 it looks like:

5-star: Average decline of 0.1/year
4-star: Average increase of 0.8/year

Not sure why the drastic ebbs and flows in 4-star players in the composite ranking except to attribute it to the inconsistent and outright stupid bias that Rivals and ESPN show (example: Devon Achane is the 96th best player in the country according to 247, the 262nd best player according to ESPN and not even in the top 250 of Rivals, which drops his composite rating to 216)
