I agree. The student athlete is being paid (tuition, room, food, stipends). If a college athlete can go out and seek additional money from sponsors, then they should be on the hook for the other expenditures provided by the college.
Also when an athlete goes out and gets that endorsement, should some of the endorsement not come back to the university since without that association the athlete would likely not have the notoriety associated with the venture (think back to Tua and the Bama jersey argument).
In any case I think the federales (USSC) will likely overturn a state findings based on the fact that there is no way this could ever be made fair. I hate the NCAA on most days, but to be honest what we currently have works about as good as anything proposed.
