Mississippi State played in San Francisco the night before Pearl Harbor. Most of the entire team enlisted on the spot in San Francisco on December 7 and many never returned home.
WW2 prevented State from rightfully claiming their national championship that year, so Alabama stepped in and claimed it instead.
