You are right. He joined the Navy and was a LT Commander of the US ship Uraguay where he served off N Africa. The most note worthy event was his ship being rammed an he defied orders to abandon ship after 200 of the men were killed. Saving the crew. After the publicity of the event the Navy realized they had a former CFB coach in their possession and made him just that, a coach.

There’s a reason why Neyland was a General and Bryant couldn’t beat him.
