That's not how this works.
Had the playoffs existed in 2004, Auburn would have gotten in as the #3 seed and would have played Oklahoma in a post-season game.
There were no playoffs in 2004, however, and so only two teams were given a shot at the national championship at the time. USC and Oklahoma just happened to run the table after being preseason ranked #1 and #2 respectfully. Bad luck for Auburn, but it was the system that was in place at the time.
Had Auburn not been so lackluster against an injury-riddled 6-4 Alabama team, Auburn might have edged OU out in the final BCS standings. They were ranked #2 in at least one poll going into the Iron Bowl. They dropped back down to #3 after that game due to their poor showing.

Had Auburn actually played an AQ OOC they would've edged Oklahoma. But they refused to.
