Anybody here ever had an experience where you knew you were about to die but against odds made it out against all odds, maybe even without an obviously rational explanation? Maybe you knew you were about to get into a head on collision only to suddenly look in your rearview mirror to see the car driving away? According to this theory you may have actually died only to have your consciousness continue on in another version of yourself in a parallel universe.

Its an interesting theory, although some people seem to take it a step too far by latching onto the literal definition "immortality".

quote:

Quantum immortality is an idea in which it is put forward that the consciousness stays alive even though the conscious being dies. It relies on the many-worlds interpretation being correct. For example, someone sets off a bomb beside the victim, that victim survives in an alternate universe by being injured but living, or by the bomb not blowing up. However, in the original universe, the victim "dies" in the blast. The consciousness continues to exist in another, perhaps many alternate universes. This is related to the thought experiment of Schrödinger's cat.

So in layman's terms, your soul?

That's a good way to look at it.

But if you want to talk specifically about souls, there's another interesting theory I've been reading about that's possibly contradictory to Quantum Immortality called Life Between Lives.

A man named Dr. Michael Newton who developed a technique called Past Life Regression to help people recall memories from past lives. He worked with over 7000 patients himself and through his research he found that the vast majority of his patients eventually uncovered memories of very similar situations that he called Life Between Lives. Basically each soul would end up in a similar afterlife speaking with a "guide". Through each life the soul is supposed to be learning a lesson to help them grow. The guide would talk to them about the life they just finished. Each soul would spend time with their "soul group", which would consist of between 3-30 other souls who are attached to yours, people who are important to your life and development and throughout each incarnation of your life remain attached to you and be important people in each one of your lives. Your soul would then meet before a council of "elders" who would determine if you had learned the lesson meant for that particular life, and give you advice. Some souls would go through a healing period before returning to life, but eventually they would end up back with their guide choosing a body for their next life that would best suite them and the lessons that soul still needed to learn. Dr. Newton died a few years ago but there's a couple hundred therapists around the world still who continue his work and it's something I'd very much like to experience one day.

Here's a link to a few LBL stories: LINK

quote:

Anna, 35, has suffered from an imbalance of her digestive system for as long as she can remember. She had been born into a family where all its members had been ill for a long time.

She became a professional dietitian and herbalist to help herself and others. At the time she contacted me, Anna’s condition was gradually worsening. Anna had several PLR sessions with me; a high level of rapport was established.

Death Scene
Anna’s immediate life was life of Stewart, who died at the age of 14 from a lung infection in a hospital in town of Battelborrow, Great Britain, on Oct. 12th, 1914. He was in pain, scared and disoriented.

Crossing over
Crossing was very smooth and short. Floating – Feeling of remembering the way home. Anna found herself surrounded with a light. She was the light; it made her feel at peace.

Orientation Stop
Anna’s guide appeared as an old man, like a father figure, projecting love and compassion. Projected color – gold.

Guide’s evaluation of Stewart’s life was very supportive and positive.
The goal of that life was to overcome weakness, to learn to let go of the life force.
The lesson was not yet learned. Anna has to continue to work on letting go and bringing love into family dynamics.

Visiting Soul group
When Anna approached her Soul group they were waiting for her in a group, “bunched – up, like trees”. There were 7 souls and they showed themselves as lights.
All members arranged themselves in a full circle with Anna in the middle.
One by one Anna’s Soul friends came to greet her, starting with her primary Soul mate, her current life partner.
It was interesting that all members of Anna’s group are friends in her present life.

During a visit with her Soul Group Anna found out the color of her energy, it was lemony yellow with a hint of orange.
She also connected with her Immortal Soul name. She was aware of this name all along but never thought of it as the name of her Soul. From that moment I called Anna by her Soul name.

Council
The Council meeting took place in a giant meadow with trees.
Four Wise beings, one of them was Anna’s Guide, were arranged in semicircle with Anna’s Soul standing in front of them.
Feeling of calm and peace….
Since the lesson in Stewart’s life wasn’t leaned, Anna’s present life lesson stays the same – keep working on releasing the desire of clinging to life force, learn to let it go. “It’s almost like it’s more pleasure to let go than clinging on.”

During the Council meeting Anna also found out that her digestive imbalance in a current life is related to the feeling of abandonment from the both God and fathers in a present life and life of Stewart.
Anna realized that the weakness of unfulfilled need is an illusion that exists only on the level of the physical world. The quality of ‘weakness’ itself has to be turned into ‘strength’.
She also received a recommendation on how to address her digestive imbalance.

At the end of the Council Meeting, Anna was taken to a special place, in a different dimension, to “witness human drama”. The purpose for this journey is to know that it’s all an illusion and to be able to recognize it as an illusion in everyday life. Anna was given specific tools regarding connection between emotions and body parts to use this new knowledge in her current life.

Life and Body Selection
Anna’s Soul was reluctant to enter her present life. Her Guide gently persuaded her to incarnate at this time.
Life selection place was a dark room with little light. There was only one body with a fine nervous system.
A family with lots of illnesses and drama around those illnesses was a perfect environment for Anna’s formative years.
The reasons for coming to this life are to bring a connection of body /mind /soul experiences into the consciousness and to assist her family to get healthier.

Baw this is longer than my senior project was.

But I'm not saying it could not be true. I had an 18 wheeler somehow stop before it was physically possible before he ran into me. Thing is I don't remember about 5 or 10 seconds. They say it was shock. But I don't know.

Well the post you replied to was mostly copy/paste and actually a different subject from the OP

But most of these Quantum Immortality stories I've read are almost identical to yours. Most of them take place with near miss car accidents, I guess because driving the most potentially deadly thing people do on a daily basis, and most of then involve a small time skip like yours. Shock would definitely be the logical conclusion, but who really knows. If not, then welcome to your new universe

Did you notice anything different in the following days, however small, that you couldn't really explain? When I say something small I mean something you might easily dismiss a long the lines of an extra $20 in your wallet that knew wasn't there before, or maybe a button in car that was somehow less worn or a different color than you remember.

The bawette I was dating was a lot less frisky from that point forward

The funny thing is I remember everything that morning even though it was 15 years ago. I would have not even been in that situation except I had stopped to get some coffee and the lady could not ring up my order because the register tape broke and it took forever for her to replace it.

I pulled onto the interstate when this arsehole blew past me. I could see a mile ahead that the traffic was starting to slow down but that clown kept on flying. When he saw the traffic stopping he swerved in my lane. To keep from crashing into him I swerved in the next lane and barely missed a car.

I then swerved into the far right lane where the truck was. I remember looking to my right since I was at an angle and saying there's no way that truck can stop. Next thing you know the truck has stopped and I'm sitting in the middle of the lane.

I pulled over to the shoulder and this woman came running up and said she thought I was going to be killed because there was no way that truck could have stopped. Somehow there was enough time for her to stop and come and knock on my window that I cannot account for. So who knows.

Similar to the late, great, Terry Pratchett and his Trousers of Time analogy from the Discworld books.

Before you put them on the trousers are in a neutral state. But once you put them you create an alternate timeline due to quantum fluctuations. The universe where you put your right leg in first is different from the universe where you put your left leg in first.

This, however, delves more into the nature of consciousness then the Trousers of Time analogy. What is consciousness and can it be transferred?

Lets call it the Starfleet Transporter theory. When you get beamed down to a planet does your consciousness beam down as well, or, do you die when they dematerialize you and an exact duplicate that thinks its you takes your place at the end of the process?

Is consciousness something that survives our death or is it chemical reactions in our brain due to us trying to sort through various stimuli in our environment? For centuries we confidently thought that only humans were conscious but recent research has shown that many animals exhibit a form of conscious thought and emotions. How is our consciousness different from that of, say, a crow?

Aren't there Trousers of Time in Legend of Zelda?

Interesting analogy with the Starfleet Transporter. Caught my nerdy Trek fan attention with that one I've often wondered what it would feel like, if everything just goes black for a second, if you're aware while it's happening, etc, but never really considered if you would be temporarily dead while being transported. It makes sense though when you think about it tbh, I mean how can all your atoms be essentially torn apart and travel the the vacuum of space and a planets atmosphere without you being technically dead?

quote:

Is consciousness something that survives our death

I lean yes on this. I believe there are other planes of existence that humans can't perceive beyond the 3D physical world, and that our consciousness or "soul" is essentially released from the confinements of the physical world. I also believe there are ways that humans can open up parts of their brains so that the mind can perceive these things that are beyond our physical realm. But it's also possible I just did way too much LSD and salvia when I was younger

Let he who has not dropped acid cast the first stone.

What is our last great adventure? Is it like, as Seanan McGuire said, "Death isn't the last great adventure, its failing your last great adventure." Or is there something else beyond the void?

If there isn't... is it such a bad thing to slip into the night? If I keeled over right now I could say I've had a good life.

I grant you, a life filled with booze, drugs, and tawdry sex... but a good life.

I joke. But, yes, while I most assuredly hope it doesn't happen, I could die now and cease to exist knowing I had a good run.

If dying is just opening a new door to existence though, is that a bad thing? If I am going to hell in a hand basket I can rest easy in the knowledge that my friends will be there with me.

As the old song says, whatever will be, will be.

You laugh now, but being an Arkansas fan I've already served my time in hell. I will be the one put in charge of tormenting you two. Given that you are Auburn and Mizzou fans... I probably just make you watch all your sports.

Stephen King wrote a book where this happens but you are aware of it and it seems to take forever since you have no sense of time. You go insane.
