His player efficiency rating was only 12.1. That was #16 for rookies and #232 amongst qualified players
Per ESPN
He is a great scorer but he has a huge journey ahead of him to provide value as a point guard running the offense
Luka Doncic and even Trae Young had statistically 2 of the best rookie seasons in recent memory and they are 3rd and 5th in PER in their draft class last season. PER favors bigs, especially Rookie bigs, who don’t shoot many or any difficult shots, not volume scorers. Of the 15 players above him, 10 of them are bigs. I understand he has a long way to go to be considered a star, but to say that a rookie who ranked 14th in his recruiting class and only played 5 collegiate games has much higher potential than a player who scored 17 PPG with solid volume efficiency in his first season is absurd.

People usually think the new guy or the backup is gonna be better. It’s ridiculous. It’s has a name, backup qb syndrome but it applies to all sports and all positions really.
One of my Penn State buddies was convinced that Miles Sanders was gonna be a better RB than Saquon Barkley last year.

Backup QB syndrome happens every year. There’s always a guy who seems like he could be the savior, even when you don’t need one. The backup always is filled with possibility, while the guy on the field is a known, limited, boring quantity.
