Five-star ATH Darnell Washington names top schools By Hank South
quote:

The Las Vegas (Nev.) Desert Pines product was on campus last month for an unofficial visit.

“Just their history,” Washington said of what he likes most about what the UA program offers. “They’re known for putting guys in the league. I saw something earlier on social media about how many five-stars go to Bama and get drafted, it’s about 50 percent. It’s a 50/50 (chance at Bama), whereas other schools it’s like 20 percent. Just Bama’s history and what they produce.”

Despite being designated as an athlete, it's tight end where the Crimson Tide is recruiting the nation's No. 2 athlete. In fact, most teams are recruiting the 6-foot-7.5, 248-pounder at tight end.

On the visit to Tuscaloosa, Washington had a chance to sit down with his primary recruiter Jeff Banks to talk about the tight end position, in particular Irv Smith Jr.'s breakout season in 2018.

“I love hearing about that with Jeff Banks and going over the film and seeing what he was doing this season and stuff like that,” Washington said.

Washington is rated the No. 14 overall player in the country regardless of position, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

247Sports compares Washington to the Arizona Cardinals' Ricky Seals-Jones (via Blair Angulo)

Tall frame with broad build. Carries 240 pounds well, but looks maxed-out physically. Long strides as a runner and good speed for his size. Strong pass-catcher who is a matchup nightmare in the red zone. Uses his body well to shield defenders. Big target who can run past most linebackers. Decent hands and can high-point the football. Could use refinement in route running and fluidity. Must also make strides as a run blocker. Potential to make an immediate impact at Power Five level as true freshman. Upside as second-round NFL Draft selection.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball is currently trending in favor of Alabama at 67 percent.
