It’s only because the coach pronounced his name that way. They only say his name like that. Michael Jordan is pronounced the normal way. It’s like all the people who properly pronounce Orgeron’s name. The R is silent and the G is a soft G the same way it is in “Baton Rouge.”

Oh Ger Ron. Very simple. Many folks choose to ignore the correct way to say it. (If you want to be extra French, you also don’t pronounce fully the last N. A very nasally sound. It’s a little difficult we don’t expect everyone to do that part.)
