The could have gotten Leach if Fulmer didn't out the AD.
Leach would have only been entertaining because of how weird he is, but I don't think he would have done a whole hell of a lot at UT. Outside one outlier season at Texas Tech, the guy is an 8 win a season coach. UT had that with Butch.
I would have looked at guys like Matt Campbell, PJ Fleck, or Mike Norvell before Leach. At least with those young guys, you bring in the possibility of them being the next big thing. Leach is who he is, and IMO he's not the caliber of coach that is going to meet the expectations of a program like Tennessee.
However, I do think they could have done worse than Pruitt. He's not the splash they wanted but he clearly knows what it takes to win football games and what a winning program looks like.

In his last 6 years in Lubbock, he went 3-3 against Bob Stoops Sooners. If he was at a power program, he would do just fine.

He'd beat Alabama at Tennessee, and who knows what kind of spring board that could bring. Pruitt won't beat Saban.

Possibly.
