Let me clarify what I am saying. I am not arguing that it is a great "event" for the combine. I am not arguing that a player should have his draft position greatly affected by what he does on the bench press. I am saying that it is an indication of upper body strength and muscle endurance, which are important factors for a football player. I suspect we are on the same page, but missing each others points and misunderstanding what we are saying.
