Chill out. Coonass is really not taken as derogatory by most Cajuns. I've lived in Louisiana all my life and the word Cajun is used almost exclusively as a culinary term in day to day conversation. But, when talking about people they are usually referred to as coonasses. Even by coonasses.

That's the key part. A Cajun American can refer to another Cajun American as a coonass but non Cajun Americans can not.
