You also need to look at circumstances prior to a coach taking over.
Richt came into a talented team, that was winning 8+ games over the previous few years
Smart has taken over a team with talent that was winning 9-10 games
Urban took over a tOSU team that was loaded and had recently competed for a championship.
Generally a new coach isn't hired b/c a team has been performing well. Harbaugh for example did not take over a team that was loaded with talent.
Saban seems to be the exception of coming into a team that wasn't Great and making it great FAST.
