I'm going to research all of this on my own of course, but could anyone recommend a neighborhood or suburb with decent public schools that would be affordable for a very middle class family? (I recognize it's also very possible that there is no such place in the area.)

Is Chattanooga one of those places like Asheville, N.C. where I really should have moved there 15 years ago if I was ever going to do it?

For public schools you want Signal Mountain or the East Brainerd/Ooltewah area zoned for East Hamilton.

After that Soddy Daisy or an outlying area. Stay the Hell away from Chattanooga city schools.
