will target
= has already contacted. It's good to get this out there for multiple reasons and neither party minds.

1. While Sumlin already knows he's on the hot seat, a little extra pressure can't hurt at this point.

2. It's a good way for the Admin/BOT to silently speak to the fans and keep them assuaged, "We know your pain and we are doing something about it, if it doesn't fix itself."

3. Everybody is concerned about image. It let's Dabo check the media/fans' temp on both sides. How does everyone react if I move? What is the media perception? Are there things about TAMU that I need to know? Are there things about Dabo we need to know? LIke a Presidential election, coaching searches will bring those things out.

4. Search activity is good for both sides. It let's other coaches know that the position is open, allowing the maximum number of qualifiers to express interest and throw their hat in the ring. It starts the bidding war for Dabo now, so by the end of even a 9-10 win season, he commands maximum dollar. Of course, even at good money, Dabo may still say no to TAMU, but there isn't a downside for either party.

A couple of things.

1. It's Board of Regents, not Board of Trustees.

2. Texas Monthly is not "the media". It's one shitty outlet, and in this case one shitty writer.

3. A&M's decision makers almost always require one catastrophic or galvanizing event in order to make any moves when it comes to the coaching front. In 2002, it was Robert Gates giving the middle finger to the establishment and firing Slocum. In 2007, it was the Franchione VIP Newsletter fiasco that was used as cover for his firing. In 2011, it was the multiple collapses in losses culminating with the 2011 Texas game that got Sherman fired. In each case, the decision was made early in the season but the action wasn't taken until later in order to give the coach the opportunity to pull a Herman Boone from Remember the Titans and get himself out of it. Two more examples: Slocum probably isn't fired after the 2002 season if he didn't follow up the Oklahoma win with a loss to 5-7 Missouri and a blowout loss to Texas. Slocum probably is fired after the 1997 or 1998 season if he had another year like 1996.
