You could also make the claim that the change in venue contributed heavily to it as well.
From 1908 to 1992 it was at Duncan Field, the field (now a parking lot) behind the Corps Dorms. Not one collapse during that 84 year period.
From 1993 - 1999, after moving to the polo fields, the stack collapsed twice - once due to shifting ground in 1994, and the 1999 tragedy.
