It was no longer against the TSSAA rules to recruit kids to private schools for sports after the private school/public school split in 1997. Some schools were doing it before then though

I mean it definitely is still against the rules.
quote:

Section 17. Athletic recruiting is prohibi ted. Athletic recruiting is the use of influence on a student or the parents or guardians of a student, by any person(s) directly or indirec tly associated with the sc hool, to secure or retain a student for athletic purposes . In the event that there is a vi olation of this rule, there shall be a penalty against the school, and the student(s) who wa s the subject of the violation shall be ineligible for a minimum of one year.

TSSAA handbook (page 17)

However, because of the nature of private school (you have to recruit every single student to attend there over public school) and the religious foundations (help the poor, less fortunate) there is a giant grey area surrounding recruiting athletes despite it being against the rules.
