I would say the shite show in 2004 was the major push. Everyone saw the fraud Chokelahoma was that year, and how they had royally fricked up by not matching Auburn and USC.

It actually started the year before, when after the fiasco in which Oklahoma was #3 in both the AP and Coaches Polls but #1 in the computer polls, which put them as #1 in the BCS, the AP poll took themselves out of the BCS poll. USC was #1 in both the AP and Coaches but ended up 3rd in the BCS due to the computer polls.
