Looking to get first credit card. Have always used a debit card and would like to find a card that has some sort of reward system. I know there are a couple threads saved on the topic but rather long or out dated. Looked at some AMEX and Capital One options, but not sure how to decide which would be best.

Wife and I do not travel much so not sure something directly tied to airline miles would make sense. My intent would be to use it in place of my debit card and pay it off every month. If there are details I can provide to help someone suggest something that is best for me I am happy to do that.

Do you have any established credit? Rewards cards are generally premium cards.

You might be able to start with a Chase Freedom, Capital One Quicksilver or entry level Discover cards for rewards.

^ what buckeye said

I had trouble getting my first card due to not having a credit history.

One route would be to go to Chase or Bank of America, explain your situation, and tell them you want your first card.

Another route would be to get your parents to make you an authorized user on their card, that way you'll build credit immediately. Then in a few months apply for your own card

Discover in not a bad first card to get. No annual fee, cash back rewards, free credit score , and their customer service is domestic, so your not talking with people in India.

We don't travel much either we have been using the Chase Amazon card for a couple years, pays for Christmas for the boys at the end of the year. They now have a prime card as well if you are prime member - 5% back on Amazon purchases.

If you are not redeeming for travel points then that rules out a lot of the more lucrative options.

No hassle wise and not digging into what you spend your money on, the Citi Double Cash is the card to beat with no annual fee.
