You watch a game without liking either team, folks generally root for the underdog

I wouldn't say 'generally' but I'd agree that a certain segment of the population roots for the underdog. That's why the Cubs have (well, had in terms of this statement) such a large national fanbase. I'd revise to say that people who support winners tend to be 'longer-term fans' while people who root for underdogs tend to be 'situational fans,' i.e. they'll root for whoever is the underdog at a particular time but won't necessarily follow the team once the given game is over.
