I think it really boils down to the individual. Some folks are miserable when it's the offseason only to be even more miserable during the season. I get over losses pretty quick because I just don't see much benefit to letting something outside my control determine my mood. I "invest" but don't make it a huge part of my "portfolio" because I understand the "market swings", so to speak.

If I had to chose between season tickets or say, a vacation each year, I'm gonna go with the yearly vacation. For me, visiting a new place is more valuable. I was fortunate enough to watch the Hog Aggie game in Reykjavik, Iceland this year and had some Kiwis calling the Hogs from Auckland a few years ago against Auburn. Lost both games but don't regret opting for the trip. That's me though so to each their own.

Quite a few folks would probably be better off not investing because they can't manage their own disappointment.
