There's thousands of 3*s each year.

From a WSJ journalist

quote:

According to Rivals ratings, on average five-stars are drafted almost two entire rounds earlier than two-stars and unrated players. The table below shows that every increase in star rating is related to a better draft position, which ranges from the end of the fifth round for unrated players to the end of the third round for five-stars.

In another WSJ article, I claimed that each increase in star rating corresponded with a better draft position and more success (higher AV) in the NFL. Those are two big claims, so let's break them down further.

Note that, since 2003, the eleven teams in the "five-star" group have combined for 21 appearances in the BCS Championship game, compared to one appearance by any of the 64 teams listed below. (The lone exception in that span, Oregon, just barely missed the cut for five-star status.) The only "five-star" teams that never played for a title in the BCS era are Georgia and Michigan; among the rest, only Notre Dame failed to make a repeat trip.

Unfortunately, Mac and the Gators will continue to hear these paper tiger arguments until they win something of note.

Really all there is to say.
