Whe kliff left he gave one of his favorite young but inexperienced coaches a shot at OC, it was a bad decision. And almost cost Sumlin his job. Looks like Mazxone is a solid hire.

Sumlin's loyalty is a double-edge sword. I think his relationships and personal loyalty are what in large part got him to where he is now in life. People who know him DO like him (with the exception of Dave Christiansen) and particularity among coaches his is well regarded and he has always prioritized keeping his coaching relationships alive (he and Stoops are still friends for example; he's friends with Spurrier as well). HOWEVER; his tendency is to give ends to his friends in the form of gigs they may not be ready for, and then to give them more leash than they have earned and be VERY hesitant to fire them, even when it is obvious they have failed, to the point that we've had to tell him his job is on the line if he doesn't. His BFF McKinney was OC before Spaz-it-all and both were his buddies and both were terrible. We had to eventually go through all of Sumlin's buddies before arriving at a real professional in Mazzone. To his credit though, unlike Les Miles, Sumlin DID eventually make the changes, even if he had to be pressured to do it. There are coaches, and Les is a great example and Mack Brown is another, who are either unwilling to change or only do it when it is way, way too late.
