In defense of Mullen, Mississippi State has never been anything impressive.

Like, they've also been playing in the best division of the best conference of the entirity of Football in the NCAA.

Like, think of having to play, every year, Auburn, Alabama, LSU (all three have won titles) -- Ole Miss is always pretty good, A&M had one bad year and Arkansas has been up and down but holy shite that'd be difficult to be successful.

Especially at a shithole in Mississippi.

I'm from Mississippi. I've watched the ups and downs of Ole Miss and MSU for 37 years now. Ole Miss was a complete shite show during Mullen's first two years here, and Freeze was still righting the ship when he got that third win in a row. So about half the time he's been here (7 seasons before this year's game), Ole Miss was crap. Auburn's been streaky as hell, going from NCs to 3 win seasons in the same time frame. Even A&M (who they've only had three conference games with) and Arky have been all over the place. LSU up until 2012 or so and Alabama have been the only world beaters he's had to worry about. The stars aligned in 2014, but if memory serves, they only beat one team that finished the season ranked (#18 Auburn) that year. Even as crappy as the East has been, it would be pretty rare to for Florida to have a 10 win season and have only beaten one ranked team at the end of it. We somehow beat two (Tenn and Ole Miss) last year ourselves.

Nothing Mullen has done in Starkville makes me think his ceiling is any better than Richt at UGA, and I'm not sure he's even that good. And if you consistently watch MSU, his clock management at the end of games is horrifying. His best case scenario is maybe winning a NC if everything fell his way and he just didn't frick it up too much, a lot like Les Miles in 2007, and I wouldn't hold my breath to see that.
