Plenty of people were. We were preseason #22, behind Bama, Arkansas, and LSU.
There were huge question marks about Cam Newton going into the season. He looked average at best in the spring game, and was inconsistent and inaccurate all through summer and fall camp. On here he was called "Brent Schaeffer 2.0".

People acknowledged the potential of Cam in Malzahn's offense and his athletisicm, and the fact that we had a shite ton of seniors. But most thought we'd have an 8-4 regular season.
