I think the issue with the rule isn't that a Saban is scared of the physical talent that smith would bring to a possible opponent, its the fact that as recently as 3 months ago he had access to all the intellectual property of Bama.
It would be difficult for LSU to let diarse transfer to Bama knowing he knows our plays, formations, etc (not that most teams don't)....jmho

Don't misunderstand me...your argument makes more sense than most on this. But we don't play Alabama, and won't play you. No way we go to Atlanta this year.
