The assumption that Brian Hoyer is locked in as the Bears’ number two quarterback is false. Connor Shaw was the best quarterback not named Cutler on the field Friday, and he took the majority of the second-team reps under center, leaving Hoyer and David Fales to rotate with the threes.

Shaw was particularly effective at manipulating the pocket and avoiding pressure the way Cutler was last season. With no pads, the offensive and defensive linemen weren’t their usual selves, but Shaw did a good job of evading defenders and keeping his eyes downfield to deliver a strike.
