Because he was the son of a legendary respected SEC coach, a lawyer with coaching and AD experience. Take that, and look at all that UT was going to be looking at with the NCAA scoping out rental places in Knoxville for their inspectors then it's not hard to understand why he was the best fit at that time. Especially with 10 or so days before NSD. This hire needed more than your cookie cutter good head coach.

UT fans can Monday morning QB all they want with Kippy Brown or Sumlin not being hired, but neither look like they would have done any better.

Dooley was the best stop gap coach at the time. Ignorant UT fans can't comprehend how he helped save the UTAD as a whole, because they have no memory or knowledge of all that the kiffin fiasco brought to light. Kiffin blew the top off UTs "good ol southern boy network" popsicle stand, and Dooley was the best combo of all that was needed to help lower the blow with the NCAA and what got out into the media.

All UT fans look at is what he did as a coach, but the least of UTs problem were on the field. Their football team was left in bad shape by kiffin, and the Ath. Dept was in worse shape.

What Dooley walked into VS what Jones walked into are night and day if you look at each situation from the AD perspective not just the product on the football field perspective. Which is important to do here.

Imo Dooley never had the chance to show what he could do simply as a head coach in his time at UT.

Oh.
My.
