There's no place in a civil world for an uncivil anything. Religion is among the most uncivil thing our society practices. Blood and sacrifices and offerings and relic practices. The sooner we abandon it the better for the majority of us who know it's what is needed.

I personally wouldn't go that far, but I do believe that a free, democratic society and fundamentalist religion simply do not mesh. Part of the social contract of a free society is being tolerant of things you don't personally agree with so that we can all coexist and express ourselves freely.

There will always be a place for people to practice their religion peacefully and without imposing on others, and even as an agnostic I will fight for people to have that right. But fundamentalist religion like radical Islam and certain sects of radical Christianity and FLDS are not tenable in a free society. If someone is willing to kill or harm other free citizens in the name of their religion then that is something we cannot abide.
