but I'd take a couple down years over the decades of being nothing more than a low to mid tier joke school.

Here's something you need to take a hard look at.

Two teams over two different 6-year periods to start two different decades.

Team 1: (2000-2009, only 2000-2005 included)

37-34 record
22-26 conference record
Humiliating loss to Iowa State
First loss to Baylor in 20 years
First losing season in over 30 years
2 losing seasons
0 conference titles
0 division titles
0-3 bowl record including a 4+ TD loss to an SEC school
2 head coaches
2 athletic directors
2 university presidents

Team 2: (2010 - present)

41-35 record
27-26 conference record
Humiliating loss to Iowa State
First losing season in 13 years
First back to back losing seasons since the 50's
Worst start since 1956 in one of those seasons
First loss to Baylor in 13 years
3 losing seasons
0 conference titles
0 division titles
2 head coaches
3 athletic directors
2 university presidents

Team 1 ended up with a 9 win season in the year immediately following the aforementioned period. It was the only decade in that school's history without an outright or shared conference or division title.

Team 2 had a 9 win season in year 2 of the time period in question.

Are you talking about Texas again?

The Longhorns had back to back losing seasons in 88-89. Before that it was the late 1930s.

You're confused about the 50's, 5-5 in 1955 broke up the '54 and '56 losing seasons (which immediately preceded Darrell Royal's 20-year reign).

I counted 13 losing seasons in 123 years of Longhorn football.
