Yeah but USC can offer more money at a school that values football more than basketball.

Dantonio will also have the SEC East rather than Harbaugh and Meyer.

He recruits in Georgia and Florida a lot anyway, but this would make his footprint even bigger down in those states.

It's his alma mater.

It's a higher profile conference and job.

Warmer weather.

Better in-state recruits.

A lot of passion for football and unbelievable in-game atmosphere.

I think it's a no-brainer for him, but I don't know where his heart lies. Tanner has to make him a huge priority because he would work wonders at USC.

Easy, now. Unspoken Rule of the Rant No. 73982 is that we don't say anything positive about the South Carolina job.

Dantonio is ubiquitously loved and respected by USC fans, but the likelihood of him leaving Michigan State at his age is simply quite low. Now, if he showed true interest and made it clear that he would leave, then yes, he's the best available coach on the market. As it is now, he's the kind of guy that we'll re-adopt as one of our own with a ceremony on gameday in about 10 years.

To the original OP, the USC fanbase at large will be disappointed if Herman spurns the offer. But that said, most of us would be thrilled with Smart (likely), Fuente (not as likely), or Campbell (can't see him saying no). We haven't been through a coaching search in earnest since 1998. We literally do not know how to act in this process.
