Got the chance to stay out of the rain and watch the Black and Gold dual last night. Very little drama, and even fewer good matchups, but still gives a little clarity before the opening dual with defending national champs Ohio State. Here are the predicted starters:

125- Barlow McGhee(RS SO) - 2013 NCAA Qualifier as a True Frosh. Redshirted last season. Beat Chase Brennan 11-4 last night in what was a de facto wrestleoff. Should be pretty solid if he improved over his redshirt season. Probably a NCAA qualifier...but not going to predict anything else at this point.

133- Jaydin Clayton(Eierman)(FR)- Stud true frosh from Columbia (Tolton). Is taking his stepfathers name of Eierman, clearing up name confusion. Anyways, looks like he has adjusted well and beat Zach Synon 5-2 last night. True Freshman are impossible to predict, but he did just beat the defending MAC champ and NCAA qualifier pretty easily.

141-165 might change a lot. Lots of quality and not enough spots to fit all of them.

141/149-Lavion Mayes(RS JR)- Returning All-American.. 2X NCAA qualifier. Looks jacked. 38-4 last season. Tweeted that he is at 149.
-Couple extra notes. Matt Manley(RSJR), formerly at 133, struggled with making weight last season, is now at 141 and looked great.

149-Pre-season accolades have Joey Lavalle down at 149 this season, and he didn't go last night. Neither did Grant Leeth (duke transfer)

Lavalle(JR)- 2X NCAA qualifier at 157. Might be dropping to 149. Haven't heard anything from my guys in the room...but I think coaches are mulling around options.

Leeth (RSFR)- Duke Transfer. went 14-4 with some big wins in open tournaments over NCAA qualifiers.

I have a feeling these guys are battling it out and coaches didn't want to put them in public just yet.

157/165- Matt Lemanowicz(RS JR) beat a freshman in the dual last night, but he looked a little big for 157, but who knows?
Tim Miklus (RSFR) Looked pretty good on the Redshirts/backups mat at 165.

Daniel Lewis (RSFR)-Dominated his opponent last night. was a 4X state champ in HS. Looks ripped and ready to roll. Probably the starter at 165 if I had to guess.

This area is a bit of a cluster right now.

174-Blaise Butler(RS SR)- Transfer from Virginia for his MBA. #5 seed going into last seasons NCAA tournament. 2X NCAA qualifier, ACC Champ in 2013, runner up in 2014.

Beat Cody Johnston (RSSR) 11-3. Blaise is small for 174, but looked really quick last night.

Dylan Wisman (FR) is redshirting this season, but looked awesome on the redshirts/back up mat.

184-Willie Miklus (RSSO)- Returning All-American. Didn't wrestle last night, but the spot is his.

197- J'den Cox(JR)- 2X All American, including 2013 National champion.

Seth Pesek (FR)- Wrestled pretty well against J'den. Redshirting, but look for him in a few years.

HWY- James Romero (FR)- dominated a scrub walk on. Very pleased with how agile this kid is for a heavy.

Overall...team looks pretty solid. Middle weights are a bit of a mystery, but looks like a couple true freshman will be starting this year.

There are rumors of Lavalle taking a redshirt and Mayes moving up to 149 seems like a real deal....which throws the entire 141-165 lineup into chaos.

Who was the other freshman that came in highly ranked? I thought he was from the east coast or something.

What do you do with Synon? I mean a proven wrestler shouldn't be wasted on the bench. Move him up a weight class and see how he does?

I'll defer to the guys who know wrestling more, but I thought he was just above average last year. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets surpassed by others. I could be wrong and maybe changing weight classes is the answer. Dunno but thanks for actually talking sports.

So guys I'm curious to see how and where they contribute.

Synon like you said Arksulli.

Barnes. Seems like a real talent but still not hearing his name much.

Roark. I think he was the other highly rated freshman coming in, but he might be in that crowded weight class(es).

Synon

A solid backup. Probably wouldn't have made the NCAA's without the autmoatic berth. Probably hit his peak in a Mizzou singlet if I'm being honest.

Barnes

Juco national champ...but those guys are hit and miss. Won using athleticism, but his technical ability is what is holding him back.

Roark

Wrestled a 4 point match with Manley, who is legit. Redshirting and see him in a few years.

Wisman is the other highly ranked recruit. Should be competing for 174 next season after a redshirt.

Thanks once again 5th.

So Cox, Miklus and Mayes are the strength we we hope/expect them to AA. Fair to say they are the ones we look to be the backbone of the squad?

Went and took another look. Correct me if I read it wrong, but the only guys who may potentially contribute this year that are seniors are Barnes and Butler? I think they'll be good this year but they have the chance to be special the following year with:

197 - Cox(SR)
184 - W. Miklus(JR)
149 - Mayes(SR)
133 - Clayton(SO)
125 - McGhee(JR)
157 - Lavalle(SR)
141 - Roark(FR/SO)
165 - Lewis(SO)
174 - Wisman(FR/SO)

And that's assuming they don't bring in someone better to compete. This year should be solid but the future is truly bright IMO.

Yes, and no. Butler yes. Barnes no. With the 141-157 range stacked with talent, Barnes won't be a part of the team really.

A senior who might fill in some would be Cody Johnston. Lost to butler, but has some varsity experience, and is a good backup at 174/184.

But other than that, lots of youngsters.
