If you truly love something and you know your no good for it you'll walk away. He let the game get away from him and he realized he's no good to the program right now. By stepping Down he gave other coaches a chance to step up. Plus USCe can look openly for a new coach.

you realize he could have notified them that this will be his last season and he will finish out the remainder of the season and USC could still use this time to be looking for a coach.... you don't just quit...
i don't expect people who have never played on a team past HS to understand this.
