I actually had a conversation with the R about this call within a year after it happened. He said that they got major Kudos from the League office for the one point safety, but got dinged on their grade for the game because it was technically an illegal kick that should have been flagged. The kicker kicked the ball while it was not in the possession of the holder. Should have been a 15 yard penalty from the spot and a loss of down. A&M would have accepted the penalty, which would have meant that the try was no-good.

The point never should have made it on the board.
