How could Spurrier chose this guy to grey shirt? Especially when you consider how bad USCe defense was this year. Maybe it was karma cause they could have used all the help they could get

Clowney happened....

Seriously, your facts are wrong: USC never asked Mauldin to greyshirt. They wanted to place him in a prep school (Fork Union?) because he had issues with his SAT scores being too low for USC's clearinghouse. Mauldin ultimately passed the minimum NCAA requirements, but not USC's minimum requirements. And he and his HC reportedly understood where the dividing line was from the start, from what I understood. It was Mauldin and another prospect - Jordan Montgomery (no, not the baseball pitcher, the football player). Both were borderline grade-wise and thought to be slightly below borderline test-wise.

Lousiville is now in the ACC and their admissions standards are typically fairly good as a conference. Don't know where UL's minimum admissions stand right now, but back in 2011 when they were in the Big East, the admissions were no different than East Carolina's, Southern Miss's, Troy's, or North Texas' for FB. They allowed partial-qualifiers, something that SEC schools don't allow.

So Mauldin didn't get his grades above the minimum for USC, and USC wanted him to go to prep instead of enrolling in that fall, which Mauldin wouldn't have gotten in anyways, regardless of total roster scholarship numbers. Mauldin was going to pick Troy, then got a phonecall from Strong while on his way to OV Troy and was offered. He and his HC made it sound like they never knew the issues with the minimum grade requirements, but that was a lie or it was the very first time any prospect was never made clear of their academic situation with USC by Spurrier, Ward, etc.

I think they knew what the conditions were, knew they wouldn't meet the conditions but thought USC wouldn't dare pull the scholly so late in the process due to Mauldin's sad life story. Then they got mad when it got pulled, even though they (reportedly) were told from the beginning what the conditions were....

This thread would be better if you left the facts out of it.
