Yes. Can you imagine going to West Africa or Libya and finding some random place that's actually pretty civilized and normal? I know I would be blown away and wonder "what the frick happened with El-Shareef, everywhere else was fricked but that one spot was surprisingly normal." Then if I was some gay writer I'd probably write some wordy shite about it

This is how the Mississippi episode of Bourdain's show was. They're in the Delta and Jackson proper, places which are positively Third World in appearance and culture. Then they pop into Oxford, which is a neatly kept town square. By comparison, it is an oasis. They went to a bar and they had lined up every person in Oxford who had ever attempted writing anything. How amazing, emerging from this bleak landscape and here's a bar filled with writers. Oh my, the culture!

A poster on here once wrote that Mississippi was the "birthplace of modern American literature". Seriously. No, there are a couple of famous writers from Mississippi. In context, they are more important to Mississippi than they are other places.

It would be like me stating that "Arkansas is the birthplace of modern American statesmanship!" because of Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Wes Clark, and Mike Huckabee. That would be dumb.

So we're good at framing a gathering, or other things of that nature, in a timely event to cast positive light. Ok there's one example. What are some others?
