Apalachicola, FL

Port St Joe, that's really close to Apalachicola, is my favorite beach spot on the gulf simply because it's a very blue collar, old fashioned southern coastal town without all the high rises, 5 star golf resorts, fruffy shops, uptight asshats in fancy cars you get farther west. Beaches are beautiful, not too full and the skyline not littered with ugly high rise condos.

That you mention this makes me think a lot of the more ritzy tourist first places aren't exactly the main thing you're looking for.

I actually don't have a lot of suggestions but would be interested in reading some other replies.

1) I've always been interested in making the trip from Tuscaloosa south into the black belt along the smaller county roads through Faunsdale south to the Alabama River (Miller's Ferry, Gee's Bend etc etc).

2) Also would like to go to Muscle Shoals AL mainly because of the historic rock/country music recording studios and not sure how the area is though I hear it's pretty beautiful.

I really liked the quaint, well-kept downtown of Apalachicola and the mom/pop stores. Had a great lunch at one of the restaurants, can't remember the name though. Port St. Joe was really cool too. Just too many places and not enough time. Muscle Shoals sounds like a really appealing future destination.
