I personally would prefer Athens to Atlanta, or at least when I was younger.

To me, a city with a mall and big box stores your definition.isn't really a college town per the definition of a college town that you are alluding to.

Athens and the university are so intertwined that it can be classified as a college town. Yes, it's bigger than your average college town, but downtown and a lot of local business only exists because of the student population.

A "college town" doesn't have to be a dump that has a college like you seem to think.
