You don't have a duty to retreat, but the law still demands that one used the requisite force necessary to eliminate the threat. Do we honestly think that being punched in a bar requires the use of deadly force? It is paradoxical how the concepts of self-defense and stand your ground, ideas supposedly rooted in protecting human life, seem to expose just how little value contemporary America has for human life.

First, google 'killed by punch' and you'll see just how much of a threat they can be.

Second, the requisite force needed to elminiate the threat doesn't mean I have to guess. If the attacker appears to be physically superior or even equal, then I have ZERO obligation to run away or HOPE I can win the fight.

Third, in a situation where I'm being attacked, the human life I place first is mine. Until that human life is secure, the life of the attacker is of no concern to me at all.

If you commit an unprovoked assault by punching someone in the face and wind up dead, the person that displayed little value in human life wasn't the shooter, it was you.
