In 2010 Auburn won the NC with a defense that ranked about 60th in the country in scoring as well as 60th or so in yards allowed per game. Stellar isn't the word to describe that defense. Average would be the correct term. Out of 120 or so teams Auburn came in right in the middle of the stats that you use to measure good defense.
The only stat on defense that Auburn was above average in was rush defense. We finished #19 in the country in that stat and got torched everywhere else.
There are about two things I've noticed over the years that championship caliber teams have in common.
1)They run the ball effectively(usually in the top 20 in rushing)
2)They stop the run on D(again usually in the top 20)
You do those two things well and you're a good football team.
Defense doesn't win championships. Never has. That's just an old cliche. The team who scores the most points wins championships.
the way you do that is by running the football better and stopping the run better than other teams can. Simple.
