I believe you're talking about the cherokee and not the grand cherokee. And I would agree that the new Cherokee is a disgrace and a total chick car.
However, I agree with rebelgator
the grand cherokee is a fantastic car, and certainly not cheap. And the grand Cherokee competes with the likes of 4Runner, explorer etc.
Now, I would vote for the Subaru Outback. A friend of mine has one and I absolutely love its utility. Just get the larger engine. I ride a triumph t100 in the city, and an audi all road for trips. Wouldn't recommend either.

I've had a couple of Triumphs '03 Thunderbird and an '07 Speed Triple. Really miss that S3.
