UAB will be the first of many to do this, especially now that other universities can point to UAB as precedent. The Obannon lawsuit is going to cause many programs in a similar situation as UAB to either discontinue or drop to a lower level. It was stupid that UAB and similar schools were trying to compete at the same level as Alabama, LSU, etc in the first place.
It's a smart move by UAB. They can now channel the football money they were spending into basketball and try to become the next Wichita St, Cincinnati, Memphis, etc. Football was bringing nothing to that institution and if anything it was making the national image of UAB synonymous with failure.

Gonna be hard to win in bball when you are stuck in the big south or worse.
