I'm just curious about what exactly they found off-putting about his ego. Big egos are par for the course for big-time CFB head coaches. Saban's got one. Spurrier's got one. No doubt every HC in the SEC has one to a greater or lesser degree, but almost certainly more of one than the average person. But they singled Mullen out from a list that included Pelini and Harbaugh, both of whom clearly have big egos, so it would be interesting to hear what Mullen said or did.
Mullen arrived here in 2009. Beat a good Ole Miss team with a piecemealed Croom setup.
2010 Went 9-4 with a Michigan Gator Bowl rout. Worst ever.
Mullen was fluffing his bonus / contract. He didn't want to coach there.

I can see him deliberately tanking an interview while hitting up his own administration for a raise. Not sure if that's the smartest course, though, since having another school sincerely considering hiring you is a better incentive than just applying for a job. But it's all speculation until someone who knows the facts decides to share them.
