I agree completely. He did something incredibly stupid and needs to pay the consequences. But unless someone determines he's an actual threat, literally no good will come of hitting him with hard time. All you do is ruin his life and pretty much ensure his future is limited to either menial work or crime. That benefits absolutely no-one, least of all "society." I get the tough-on-crime narrative, but there are just too many cases where going full-bore is neither rational nor ethical.

200 hours of community service is a practical sentence.
