My guess is that he gets a few weeks in county or city lock-up; a few years of community service; huge fines and probation for something like 5 years
I am sure he is already kicked out of school - I think the kid is from Virginia
prison for him would serve no purpose for anyone
I agree completely. He did something incredibly stupid and needs to pay the consequences. But unless someone determines he's an actual threat, literally no good will come of hitting him with hard time. All you do is ruin his life and pretty much ensure his future is limited to either menial work or crime. That benefits absolutely no-one, least of all "society." I get the tough-on-crime narrative, but there are just too many cases where going full-bore is neither rational nor ethical.

200 hours of community service is a practical sentence.
