Why open up the discussion to their respective 2nd years when we're exactly 1/12th of the way into Bert's?

If you want to compare, compare apples to apples.

Their 1st years are similar in that both schools played poorly. They AREN'T similar in that Fran replaced the ever-loved Slocum who had at least built a consistent program up. Bret came in after 2 years of turmoil with no recruiting to speak of.

The similarities begin and end with W/L. If you stay in that vacuum, it makes sense.

I think it's fair to discuss whether 6-6 or 5-7 is a reasonable expectation for your season since it's already begun, in comparison to Fran's 7-5. I'm giving him a few games of leeway because of the difficulty of the SEC and the fact his situation is worse.

Slocums recruiting was not good in his later years though. Mack and Stoops were running circles around Slocum in his final few years and we were extremely thin in a couple areas. It wasn't as bad as your situation but it's not like he left behind some ready made contender

Dennis Franchione had to start a WALK-ON at Middle Linebacker in the 2003 season. From 1999 (the recruiting class after the Big 12 Championship) to 2002, R.C. Slocum signed...wait for it...one inside linebacker (Bryan Gamble).

Let me say this again: Slocum managed to recruit one inside linebacker for a team that plays a 3-4 defense over the course of FOUR recruiting classes.

The only way in which Bert and Fran are NOT similar is that John L. Smith didn't preside over a steady decline over a period of 6-7 years and Slocum did.

A&M didn't just replace their head coach in the 2002-2003 academic year. They replaced their University President, Athletic Director AND head football coach in the same season.
