Yes. I see the conference championship games like the first round of the playoffs. You win, you advance, you lose, you're out.
Otherwise the advance is not merit based, and you devalue the championship game to zero.
You may as well not even have a playoff, just award the trophy to whomever looks most deserving.

I don't necessarily disagree. But that's my fear with the committee and no real clarity on criteria. What is more important?
You have year like 2001, I would argue UF and UT were "better" teams but they didn't get the hardware. On paper, does a 3 loss LSU trump UF, UT, Nebraska, etc. If conference championships are the measurement, great, but I fear it will differ every year.
