Bama won the first Bowl Alliance (later BCS) title against Miami. Never before had the #1 and #2 team been matched in a bowl.
I also believe Bama was the first southern team to beat an Ivy League team when y'all beat Penn in the early 20's I think. It was a huge upset at the time and i remember reading that the score of the game was put up on a wall outside a laundromat or something in tuscaloosa and didn't come down for like 30 years.

Pretty sure that's happened a few times. '79 Sugar Bowl for one
