I don't doubt that, but it's not like a UC Irvine graduate is any more accomplished than a run-of-the-mill state school.

UC Irvine is actually a really good school, as are most of the UC schools. If you live in So Cal and don't get in to USC or UCLA it is probably the next best option. The UC System has a large endowment as well that is spread amongst all the UC schools, not just Berkeley and UCLA. UC Santa Barbara is also very good. Lots of very smart kids in California, especially with the large Asian population there that tends to emphasize academics rigorously.
